Classes
House of Mercy Educational Resource Center provides summer enrichment and academic intervention classes. Our program emphasizes visual and performing arts as a means to engage students in the back to basics curriculum.
Stories Through Images ~ Scrapbooking
Designed to engage all students—Standard English Learners, and Second Language Learners, to write from personal experiences, create vignettes of memorable childhood episodes, connect writing to photos, and to produce a scrapbook. They will create a 24-page, 8 X 8, keep sake album. Students will share their cultural stories and traditions through writing and photos with their families and our community.
Beginning Music Theory
Basics of music theory-Learn the building blocks of music-the language of what you hear. This includes Rhythms-Meter-Chord/Scale Structure-Melodic & Rhythmic Dictation. "How to look at a song on paper and understand what you see." And much more...
Reading Book Club
Students read aloud, and are read to from a variety of multicultural, high-interest short stories, picture books, poetry, and anthologies. Themes range from friendship, growing up, self-esteem, success, and family. Students write reflections and discuss the main ideas, message, and response to literature. Options include, drawing, drama, cartooning, and interactive writing. Students can check out books of their choice from the HOMERCY Library for the duration of the summer. Certificates, bookmarks and other rewards are given for participation. Whether your child is an auditory, visual, or kinesthetic learner, our teachers will find a strategy that will motivate your child to read.
Art
Students work with chalk on canvas while learning the fundamentals of drawing. The goal for the program is to design a silk-screened T-Shirt with a powerful message of self-determination and motivation.
A La Carte Cooking
Students will learn about nutrition, gain culinary skills, prepare mini-meals and vegetarian dishes under the direction of a mother/son team (an aspiring, award winning chef.) Students will receive hands-on guidance to create healthy, tasty meals, as options to fast-food, quick-fix meals. Students will learn table etiquette and social skills taught by a prominent educator and executive director of an educational non-profit in the Bay Area.
Conversational French
Learning a second or third language is an avenue to explore other cultures nationally and internationally. Our qualified language teacher with 13+ years experience give the students an introduction to conversational French and through games, music, drama, art, and speaking. Students use technology for re-enforcement.
Virtual Economics 101
Students study the 9 Principles of Economics. The goal is to learn these principles now, and gain the knowledge and skills needed to make informed economic decisions. This 101 course provides the fundamental structure for life as students began to make choices based on benefit/cost analysis in all aspects of their lives.
